An hour later, and my secret plans – known only to Michelle – now resulted in a minibus arriving, a villa having been booked many weeks ago, and outside of Reception I greeted my fifty-year-old French doctor grandson, Richard, and his family, the grown daughters giddy at the sight of me.

I helped them with luggage and led them down to the villa, Frieda Villa, the fridge freshly stocked, the kettle knocked on. As the wife and daughters unpacked, I sat with a cold beer with my grandson in the huge bay window, peering down at the palm trees and the beach.

‘Very good here,’ he commended.

‘Very hot as well, so hide away in the middle of the day,’ I told him.

He nodded and sipped his beer. Turning to me, he studied me for a moment. ‘This trouble in New York…’

I had not taken my eyes off the beach. ‘Will soon be dealt with, and after it will be quieter for me, fewer enemies, till I go find more that is. I could just ignore the corruption and try to have a quiet life, but that would be a waste of my life.

‘So for people like you and your family I’ll continue to be a source of stress, and you’ll just have to accept that I’m here for a purpose, a fight, good against evil.’ I finally faced him. ‘But I have allies, strong ones. Put down your beer and close your eyes.’

Puzzled, he did as asked.

Julie, take us to ancient Jerusalem.

We were both soon stood near the Mount of Olives and looking across at Temple Mount.

‘My god,’ he gasped, and he turned around to survey the area.

‘This is what it was like two thousand years ago,’ I told him. I pointed. ‘There, Roman soldiers.’

He studied the squad of men marching in step.

I added, ‘I was here during the Crusades, not sure if I was here earlier, but it is possible. Julie, take us back.’

He opened his eyes and found that he was back, a wide-eyed glance at me as I grabbed my beer.

‘You can worry less for me,’ I told him. ‘I have powerful friends.’

Nodding, he lifted his beer. ‘We meet with your granddaughter Gabrielle, and we speak on the phone each week. And we are careful, good with security, no one knows.’

‘Best kept that way, yes,’ I said with a sigh.
